The cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar has an oval section and a slight curve throughout its length; there is a deep recession in its upper edge, inset only slightly from each end of the object. At one end, the gently curving mortar terminates in a rectangular-sectioned knop that has been pierced with a circular hole to create an attachment loop. At the opposite end, the mortar thickens into an irregular section, to form the neck of a zoomorphic terminal. The terminal projects upwards and outwards from this to form the head of a beast with a blunt, triangular muzzle which has an incised open mouth. From the top of the beast’s head project two mismatching ears, one of which points outwards along the same axis as the brow and the other of which points upwards. Beneath these on each side, a deep circular eye has been incised: the eyes are not level. From the centre of the base of the mortar projects a rectangular-sectioned knop that has broken quite close to the base, leaving two small projecting tips. This suggests either the knop divided into two feet, or it originally had a hole pierced through it. Either way, it was probably intended to steady the mortar during use (Jackson 1975). The mortar is fairly worn and has a dark green-brown patina, with patches of a far brighter green corrosion. Jackson (1975), illustrates several similar examples, p. 177 ref. 4-5, with ref. 4 having a steadying knop projecting from the bottom of the mortar, but ref. 5 displaying a more similar end-loop; both examples have zoomorphic terminals that are slightly bovid. Jackson (1975) struggles to assign a specific date range, but suggests that the insularity of the artefact type point to it originating prior to the Roman conquest. This is a one-piece brooch with blilateral spring of four turns and internal chord. The bow is flat with a solid catch-plate. The majority of the spring and pin is missing, only part of the first turn of the spring is remaining. The bow is decorated with a stamped zig zag pattern extending from the top of the bow to the foot. The shape of the brooch is slightly distorted and the copper alloy has a pale green patina. The perforation has an internal curve indicating it may have accommodated a ring rather than a stud. A small hole intruding on the upper face of the perforation suggests the harness fitting was probably miscast. The bar of the harness fitting divides decoratively to meet two knobs, which are spiked on the underside; there is also a knobbed spike at the axis of the bar with the fitting hoop. The hoop has been corroded on the inner face. An object with very similar studs are illustrated in Jope (2000: pl 271g), it is from Dragonby, Lincolnshire and described as a strap-mount. Jope states that it is unclear if these were used on horse harness, or on human equipment. Curator's report: 2009T265 Description: A cut fragment of round section Discussion: Cut sections of gold metal have been discovered at the Iron Age site of Snettisham, Norfolk, and therefore it was considered that this object may also date from the same period. Unfortunately this object is undiagnostic, and as such metal analysis was requested. Non-destructive analysis of the surface metal content shows it is 84-87% gold, 11-13% silver and 1% copper. This metal composition would be consistent for the Iron Age period but this does not definitively identify this object as Iron Age in date. It is therefore possible that this object dates to the Iron Age but we cannot be certain. Conclusion: The object is over 80% gold so qualifies as Treasure in this respect. Based on form and metal composition, it could date to the Iron Age but it is impossible to be certain as there were no associated finds. It is therefore impossible to be certain that this object is over 300 years old. On the balance of probabilities we can therefore only state that this object is possibly Iron Age; therefore due to this lack of certainty in dating the object falls outside the stipulations for Treasure as laid out in the Treasure Act 1996. Potin 13 Curator's report: The Coins All sixteen coins belong to a class of Iron Age coins known as 'Flat Linear I' potins. While the majority of Iron Age coins were produced by striking a gold, silver or bronze blank between a pair of dies, potins were instead cast in moulds and made from a lead/tin-rich bronze alloy. Although highly abstract, it is clear that their designs copied earlier types which depicted a human head and a butting bull, originally derived from the coinage of the Greek city of Massalia (Marseille, France). Curator's report: A strip of bright yellow pitted gold that has been bent six times forming three rough (un-unintended) loops. The edges of some sections appear to have been worked, being slightly rounded. Discussion: This strip of gold is long enough to have fitted round a small finger but there are no diagnostic features that could provide a date.
