Someone from Chris Rudd has identified the coin as a Hesperange type of half-stater, class 1, around 2nd century BC and sometimes referred to as a hemistatere a la fleur, which are sometime attributed to the province of Namur in southeast Belgium. References: BN 10280, Scheers/GB fig 41, 42; Sills 161, 162; DT 31. It was probably struck from worn, rusty dies, but the obverse probably contained the head of Apollo facing right, and a biga on the reverse. An expert at the British Museum has provided a less precise identification, but notes that the size is indicative of a stater, rather than a half-stater, though it is too light in weight to be a stater, unless very worn and debased. Four of the five coins delivered to the British Museum in November 2007 are Iron Age coins. These appear to represent addenda to another hoard (2006 T494) found at the same site. Several other groups of coins have been found in the same field and those adjacent to it (see 2006 T148 and 2002 T92; 2003 T401; 2004 T468; 2006 T26; 2007 T48; 2007 T597). The fifth coin referred to above is probably related to the Roman hoard and is considered separately (see 2008 T153). The four Iron Age coins comprise three gold 'staters' and one silver 'unit' all of which date to the late first century BC or early first century AD. Coins of these types were produced locally and are therefore associated with the Corieltavi, a tribe who are thought to have inhabited the modern north-east Midlands, Humberside and parts of Yorkshire in the late Iron Age. The four coins form a convincing hoard group or votive assemblage. The Coins 1. Gold plated copper alloy 'South Ferriby' type stater; VA 811.23 = BMC 3149 This coin is an ancient plated imitation. It is made of a base metal (copper alloy) and the surface is plated with gold. Plated imitations are common in the Iron Age. Diameter: 21 mm; Weight: 5.23 g. This coin has now been registered as CCI 08.6254. 2. Gold 'Kite' type stater; VA 825.09 = BMC3184 Diameter: 19 mm; Weight: 5.33 g. Registered as CCI 08.6255. 3. Gold plated copper alloy VOLISIOS DVMNOCOVEROS stater; VA 978.02 = BMC 3337 This coin is also an ancient plated imitation. Diameter: 19.2 mm; Weight: 5.27 g. Registered as CCI 08.6257. 4. Silver AVN COST unit; VA 914.03 = BMC 3261 Diameter: 14.7 mm; Weight: 0.74 g. Registered as CCI 08.6256. Date, Metal Content, Findspot The coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to age, number and metal content. However, given the reported circumstances of discovery, these coins should all be considered as Treasure on the strength of their association with the earlier North Dalton Iron Age hoard (2006 T494). Furthermore, as I highlighted in my report on this earlier find, it seems highly likely that the deposition of these coins is closely related to those reported as the 'Driffield' hoard, discovered only several hundred meters away. It may be possible to establish the nature of the relationship between the North Dalton Iron Age and the Driffield hoard with the full cooperation of the three separate groups of finders and the local Finds Liaison Officer. The coins All eight coins are Roman silver coins of a denomination known as the denarius (plural denarii). The latest coin of the group is a Roman Republican denarius dating to 118 BC. The latest coin is an early imperial denarius of Augustus dating to 2 BC to AD 4. There are six Roman Republican coins and two Augustan coins in the group. Recommendation As this find was discovered before 1997 it must be evaluated under the Treasure Trove laws, and not the more recent Treasure Act. Under Treasure Trove, evidence would have to point to the object having been deliberately buried with the intention of recovery. The coins were discovered in the ground together with no evidence for a container. The small number of coins and the fact that they are likely to have circulated together in antiquity points to a 'purse' hoard that could have been lost without the intention of recovery. (A comparable case is a purse of 30 denarii found at Hadrian's Wall). It would therefore be difficult to prove that the coins were buried with the intention of recovery, as required for them to be declared Treasure under the law of Treasure Trove. The object has a body composed of 2 adjoined hemispherical discs, which both have a circular perforation in their base. These cupped discs originally would have taken bone, coral, or possibly glass or enamel decoration. The underside of the body remains flat. One side of the body retains the attachment bracket, which is formed by a disc projecting perpendicularly from the side of each cup of the body, with a thick tube running between them. There is evidence for a similar bracket on the other side of the body, but it has broken off, leaving abraded projections from the body only. The fastener is nearly complete, but bent. The 'base' end has the underside in an openwork triangle, with semicircular sides holding openwork decoration between them, unconnected to the underside. The decoration consists of two discs with circumscribed circles with traces of enamel and a crescent arcing toward the hook end of the fastener. A thick arm extends from the underside of the base to the hook end, D-shaped in section. The hook end has a thick, central projection perpendicular to the arm. At the top of the projection is some worn decoration and subsidiary arms emerging from the projection. Only one of these is complete, and forms an inturned S-shape.
