<notes>Martin Allen: This is the first find of a coin of Warminster recorded by EMC since it
began in the late 1990s. Warminster was a minor mint with a very small
and occasional output at various times from the reign of Æthelred II to
that of Harold I. The moneyer of this coin, Godwine, struck coins only
in Æthelred II&#39;s Last Small Cross type (c.1009&#45;c.1016).</notes>

NEEDLE HOLDER</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>

A Roman &#45; Early Medieval bone artefact probably a needlecase daring 4th &#45; 5th century. This bone artefact has been worked to have four flat sides creating a square&#45;shaped cross&#45;section and it is hollow. It tapers from 6.36mm slightly to one end (5.58mm) and more so to the other end (4.17mm). There is wear and damage to both ends. All four sides are decorated with ring and dot motifs. Side one has four sets of three ring and dots arranged to form a trefoil. Side two has two ring and dot trefoils flanked by three ring and dots arranged in a line. Side three is a repeat of side one. Side four has four sets of three ring and dots arranged in lines.

Dr Ian Riddler identified this as a needlecase and writes &quot;Not a common object type....but a very very interesting one. The closest parallels for it come from the Continent and are of 4th to 5th century date (mainly 5th century).  These things are quite widespread in the north German cremation cemeteries of that date (like Westerwanna and Issendorf, for example) and they are thought to be needle cases. By rights, they ought to appear at Spong Hill, but they don&#39;t and they are very rare in this country.&quot;

Identification by Dr Ian Riddler, Small Finds Specialist, specialising in Roman artefacts and tools manufactured from bone.

Dimensions: length: 64.05mm; width: 6.36mm; weight: 2.57g.</full>

HOOKED TAG</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A mid to late Anglo Saxon hooked tag made from silver, with a flat circular head and a projecting, tapering hook. Directly opposed to the hook there are two circular attachment holes punched into the circular head. The front is decorated with an engraved circle within which is an equal&#45;armed cross made up of four U shapes; the tops of the Us are linked by the circle. Each of the arms is also connected via a double&#45;strand ring that links them closer to the centre. There are some punched dots roughly arranged in lines in the centre of the cross, on the arms and within the ring; there are three dots in each arm, a possible diagonal cross in the centre, and two or three dots in each segment of the ring. Traces of niello remain within some of the incised decoration. The two attachment holes are above the side arms of the cross.

Hooked tags are probably all&#45;purpose fastenings used to secure clothing and purses, and are known from the second half of the 7th to the 11th centuries. A silver and niello hooked tag of similar form and decoration, but more neatly made, has been recorded from Brabourne, Kent, and has been dated to the 9th or 10th century (TAR 2004, no. 95; ref. 2004T327).

<full>An Early Medieval (late Anglo Saxon) copper alloy strap fitting with ring, probably a ring&#45;link connector probably dating to the 9th century. This strap fitting has been cast in one piece with a front and back plate connected via a tapered loop which has a circular cross&#45;section. Attached to this loop is a ring with an irregular cross&#45;section, some of which can be attributed to heavy wear. There are two copper alloy dome&#45;headed rivets arranged longitudinally down the midline and pass through both the front and back plates and would have secured a strap. The edge on the open end of the front plate has been decoratively cast with two small points, one in each corner. It is possible these were also present on the back plate but they are broken or worn away. Concretions remain between the two plates.

Dimensions: length of strap fitting: 40.84mm; width: 12.51mm; thickness: 8.06mm; diameter of ring: 21.49mm; weight: 15.18g.</full>

Identification by Dr Kevin Leahy and Dr Helen Geake, PAS Finds Advisors for Early Medieval artefacts.
Kevin Leahy: What a lovely and interesting group. I agree with Helen Geake that the decoration looks more Carolingian than Anglo&#45;Saxon but I can find no real parallels for it and think that the motif is simplified version of a Carolingian motif. The form of the strap ends with their mouse head terminals look like that those that we see on Trewhiddle strap ends and I think that they are local products. The strap&#45;sliders are also clearly local as they are very similar to a pair found in the Trewhiddle hoard which dated to before 875 (Wilson DM, Anglo&#45;Saxon Ornamental Metalwork AD700&#45;1100, BM, London, 1964, Nos 101, 102). As Helen says the looped ring is hard to date but the shape and feel of it would suggest that it ninth century like the rest of the group.

<description>
<full>An Early Medieval (Carolingian) copper alloy strap end dating to the 9th century. This strap end has a split end, convex sides, zoomorphic terminal and foliate decoration. The zoomorphic terminal shows a beast&#39;s head with laid&#45;back ears. The nose is depicted by a vertical groove; the eyes by two pits and the ears are circular with crescent&#45;shaped stamps forming the detail. The eyes are deeply recessed and originally may have held a bead. The body of the strap end is decorated with a single branch motif with oval leaves projecting from each side. The branch is contained within a sub&#45;rectangular field except for the main stem which projects up to meet the open end creating a bi&#45;lobed appearance. There is a copper alloy rivet with domed head within each of these lobes. To each side of the branch the edges of the strap end are decorated with slightly irregular transverse grooves creating the appearance of a beaded border. Concretions partially cover the front and back surfaces and fill the open end.

STRAP END</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
There is a copper alloy rivet within each of these lobes; the heads of the rivets are broken. To each side of the branch the edges of the strap end are decorated with slightly irregular transverse grooves creating the appearance of a beaded border. The back plate of the open end is broken across one rivet hole and the corner is missing. Concretions partially cover the front and back surfaces and fill the open end.

There is some damage to the edge of the left lobe of the open end. When found this strap end was covered in thick concretions the finder cleaned two or the four strap ends from the group to reveal the decoration and form. Some traces of the concretions remain in the open end and around the decoration.

STIRRUP</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An Early Medieval (late Saxon) copper alloy stirrup strap mount dating 11th century. This stirrup strap mount is a Williams Type A, sub&#45;triangular mount. At the apex of the mount is a fleur&#45;de&#45;lys motif forming a tri&#45;lobed projection; the body of the mount is a pointed oval shape and there are two lobes projecting from either side of the lower point. At the base there are the remains of the flange which extends along the entire length of the base. The front of the mount is decorated with a cast pattern comprising a symmetrical scrolled pattern. The mount is quite worn with a red brown patina. There are two perforations just above the flange; one in each of the two projecting lobes; they are aligned along the length of the flange. A third perforation is located in the centre of the fleur&#45;de&#45;lys motif at the apex. Traces of iron corrosion within the perforations and on the reverse of the mount are probably the remains of the iron rivets or possibly from the iron stirrup.

Dimensions: length: 57.55mm; width: 28.79mm; thickness: 3.63mm; weight: 29.59g.

POINT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A bone point which may date to the late Early Medieval but is essentially undateable. This bone point has been crudely worked on the long bone of an animal; one end has been roughly shaped to form a point. There is some evidence of wear on the point and burning at the opposite end. There is no evidence of wear where the point would be held which is unusual unless it was used as a burnisher. The opposite end to the point is broken, possibly across a perforation. There is no wear around the perforation and bone points with perforations tend to be worked to a higher standard.

Dimensions: length: 110.42mm; width: 13.27mm; thickness: 6.08mm; weight: 6.62g.

BROOCH</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An Early Medieval (late Anglo&#45;Saxon) &#45; Medieval copper alloy enamel cloisonné disk brooch (late 10th &#45; 11th century). The brooch is constructed from a base&#45;plate of copper alloy sheet with seven equidistant rounded projections; a copper alloy collar has been soldered onto this base plate and set within the collar is the cloisonné enamel pattern. The pattern is marked out by copper alloy cells and comprises a five petalled flower against a blue enamelled background. The petals of the flower are infilled with white enamel and in the centre there is a circular cell infilled with yellow enamel. On each of the projecting lobes a small collar of copper strip is soldered, each would secure a glass sphere, however none of these spheres remain. On the reverse of the base&#45;plate are the remains of the twin lugs which would have secured the pin. The pin and catch&#45;plate are no longer present. There are also large areas of gilding remaining on the reverse and on the collar.

Bucton (1986:8) catalogues fifteen of these brooches, they are very similar in form and decoration.

Dimensions: thickness: 5.39mm; diameter: 24.19mm; weight: 5.28g.

BROOCH</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>Incomplete gilded silver pin from an early&#45;medieval annular or penannular brooch. It has a D&#45;shaped or pentagonal cross&#45;section, with a flat undecorated reverse and a rounded or angled front. In two places the front has been flattened; in the centre is a lozengiform depression bearing an interlaced knot in counter&#45;relief, and at one (probably broken) end is a similar but now triangular panel bearing a different design of counter&#45;relief knot. The pin may be broken here (although the end is concave and its surface is even and fairly smooth), but it is possible that the panel was always triangular and bordered an elaborate pin head. The two knots are of different designs; the lozengiform panel has a loose symmetrical tripartite loop with pointed ends and two tight knots, and the triangular panel has a triangular loop with a central loosely tied knot. Below the lozengiform panel is a tiny heart&#45;shaped raised area with further raised dots in the two upper lobes. The pin is bent out of shape below the central lozengiform panel, which has caused some stress to the metal on the reverse, but this half of the pin is intact with its blunt point. It is more pentagonal or facetted in cross&#45;section in the lower half than here than above the central panel. The gilding is patchy but clearly originally covered all sides including the reverse; no gilding is visible in the sunken areas, but it may be there and be obscured by dirt and corrosion.
The reverse is flat and undecorated, but has a transverse ridge just above the bend and just below the heart&#45;shaped motif. The ridge appears to be broken and has some copper corrosion adhering.
Original unbent length: c. 82mm. Length as bent: c. 57mm. Maximum width (at top): 6.2mm. Maximum thickness: 2.7mm. Weight: 6.65g.
This design of pin, with one or more panels of decoration, is known from various Irish and Pictish brooches. In date they range from the Hunterston brooch (late 7th or early 8th century) to the Ardagh and Ervey brooches of the 9th century (Youngs 1989 nos. 69, 81 and 86). A particularly close parallel is the pin from the County Cavan brooch dating to the late 8th or early 9th century. Although the County Cavan brooch appears to have been far better made, it has very similar triangular and lozengiform panels on the shaft filled with the same kinds of interlace design. A date of 8th or 9th century is therefore appropriate for this pin.</full>

BUCKLE</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An incomplete late Roman &#45; Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) cast copper alloy object, possibly a buckle or a linking ring from a girdle hanger, 5th &#45; 6th century. The find consists of the moulded copper alloy arch that would have been looped over a belt or girdle, with a decorative hanger suspended from the loop at the end of each arm. The arch has been cast in an irregular triangle section, with a flat back and base and a moulded outer face. At the centre of the outer face are two equally&#45;space face masks, each with a pair of concave round eyes and a concave vertically scored mouth. The remaining arm of the arched hanger curves steeply round and narrows into a D&#45;shaped section. At the terminal of the arm it expands outwards again into a rectangular collar and a knop which has been pierced with a circular suspension loop. The interior edge of the arch has been worn fairly smooth, although it is not clear whether this occurred prior to or post&#45;deposition. The object has a very dark green patina, and patches of white concretion on the upper edge near the masks. A similar object is recorded in the British Museum collection of Anglian types, although this has zoomorphic decoration rather than figurative; it is dated by associated objects to around AD 500 (1923, 89)

Stuart Laycock notes: the top half looks more medieval than late Roman, but the attachment method looks more late Roman.
Kevin Leahy notes: this may be too wide to be a linking ring for a girdle hanger.

<notes>Girdle hangers are so&#45;called, because they were clearly worn suspended from the belt or girdle, although the degree to which some of them may have had a function is unclear (MacGregor and Bolick 1993). MacGregor and Bolick note that they are found exclusively in female graves, and almost exclusively in Anglian areas (1993, 228).

stirrup</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A complete Early&#45;Medieval copper&#45;alloy stirrup&#45;strap mount (11th or early 12th century). The mount belongs to Williams&#39;s Class A, Type 13 (Williams 1997). It is lozenge&#45;shaped and has a rectangular cross&#45;section. From the uppermost point of the plate projects a smaller lozenge that has been pierced with a central circular rivet hole. This would have served to attach the mount to a leather strap. In line with the central horizontal axis of the plate, a further small lozenge projects out from each side of the mount and each has a decorative raised knop in the centre. In the very centre of the plate in line with these small projections is a larger, very squared, recessed lozenge. Beneath this is a large area of ferrous concretion, where an iron rivet remains in situ. This has been pierced through a central attachment hole and is visible also on the reverse of the mount. On either side of the rivet, the stirrup&#45;strap mount widens into a flat lobe, before the edge straightens again for a short distance. The straight sides indicate the point at which the mount projects back towards the reverse into a short solid tab oriented at ninety degrees to the rest of the mount. The reverse of the mount is undecorated; it has a pale grey&#45;green patina. The front surface of the mount has a similar green patina, but a fair amount of the surface is a buff red&#45;brown colour. Type 13 stirrup&#45;strap mounts are not particularly common; only eight are illustrated by Williams (1997, fig. 48). Williams notes that the artefact type is almost impossible to date thanks to most of the known examples being detector finds; only two published stirrup&#45;strap mounts are from dated contexts (1995, 2). From art&#45;historical evidence on other types of stirrup&#45;strap mount they are thought to date broadly to the 11th century, and perhaps as late as the early 12th.

Dimensions: length: 42.22mm; width: 32.38mm; thickness: 2.50mm; weight: 13.52g.
