<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A cast silver fragment of hacksilber that probably functioned as a silver ingot, probably dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 410&#45;1066.
The fragment is roughly drop&#45;shaped in plan, but with an irregular, globular body that is smooth on one face and uneven and pitted on the opposite face. The silver fragment is oval in section. A necklike project ends with a relatively clean and unabraded cut, completed in two motions and starting from the smooth face.
The silver fragment does not retain any details and appears to be roughly formed, though it cannot be certain is it was simply cast from molten silver or if an object, for example a bracelet, was incompletely melted when removed from heat.</full>

SWORD</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A complete cast copper&#45;alloy sword pommel of Early Medieval Anglo&#45;Scandinavian date, c. 900&#45;1100.
The pommel has a base that crecentic base that curves towards the outer edges, with five rounded lobes that increase in size towards the centre. The central lobe has a sub&#45;rectangular&#45;shaped perforation on its outer face, through which tang of the sword would have originally passed. The pommel is mostly hollow. There are no rivets on the pommel, which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang.
This is a sword pommel of late Early&#45;Medieval date and of probable Viking/Anglo&#45;Scandinavian origin. It belongs to Petersen&#39;s (1919) L type VI pommels, a fusion of Anglo&#45;Saxon and Anglo&#45;Scandinavian fashions, it dates from the 10th or 11th century.</full>

<full>A fragment of a cruciform brooch of Anglo&#45;Saxon manufacture, dating to the 6th century.
Only the foot remains, with a break above an undecorated panel, separated from the horsehead terminal by two bands across the width. The terminal has raised &#39;ears&#39; with incised diagonal lines (3) below each ear, separating the ears from the now worn eyes. The nostrils are raised scrolls on the rounded tip of the terminal.
The underside of the panel retains the hooked catchplate for the pin.</full>

SCABBARD</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A cast copper&#45;alloy zoomorphic and anthropomorphic Frankish scabbard chape of c. 5th&#45;6th century date.
Only the front plate of the chape remains (see HAMP&#45;4CBF82 for a complete and closely similar example). It consists of a trefoilate plate that can be separated into an anthropomorphic terminal flanked by zoomorphic &#39;wings&#39; emerging from the base/body of the plate.
The anthropomorphic terminal consists of a simple human head with moulded decoration in low relief, depicting eyes directly below a possible conical helmet with nose&#45;guard. The two wings curve upward from the base/body and connect with the sides of the cheeks of the human face. These wings are further separated from the body of the plate by circular openwork holes of approximately 3mm diameter. The wings are zoomorphic, decorated as bird heads reminiscent of late Roman military motifs and Sahlin&#39;s style I. The heads are placed atop long necks and turned inwards, such the the curved beaks frame the human face, with a mouth line indicated by a narrow groove and an annulet indicates each eye. The back of the neck, along the outer edge of the wing is separated into small squares. The base of the wings are separated from the body by a chevron. There are slight traces of incised decoration on the body/base, but this is very worn and uneven.
The reverse is undecorated.
A circular perforation is found behind the eye of each bird&#39;s head on the wings, indicating where the chape was fixed to the scabbard.
It can be classified as Menghin&#39;s (1983, 126&#45;128,  351&#45;353) Type 3a.
A number of Frankish scabbard chapes have now been recorded on this database, most of Type 3a, his Typ Samson: SF2799 (Mildenhall, Suffolk), SUR&#45;72CF23 (Greywell, Hampshire), DENO&#45;061D23 (Newark, Nottinghamshire), HAMP&#45;4CBF82 (Micheldever, Hampshire) and LEIC&#45;7F2E18 (Sproxton, Leicestershire). Menghin&#39;s catalogue contains ten examples of this sub&#45;type, one from England (Abingdon 42), six from France, two from Germany and one from Italy (Menghin 1983, 351).
There is also a group of distinctive English chapes which do not fall into any of Menghin&#39;s groups: IOW&#45;C1B525 (Bowcombe, Isle of Wight), NMS&#45;751713 (Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk), SUSS&#45;427FF4 (near Eastbourne, East Sussex) and possibly SUSS&#45;46F1D7 (Beddingham, East Sussex).
In general Menghin&#39;s evidence suggests a 5th&#45;century date, but the group of English chapes differs slightly in form and so may also in date (Naylor et al. 2008, 322).</full>

MOUNT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A gold mount of Early Medieval date found during controlled archaeological excavations at Bamburgh Castle dating to the 8th&#45;9th centuries.
The mount is semicircular in plan, made from pressed gold sheet and decorated with a beaded wire outer border and an inner border of interlinked drop&#45;shaped hoops of gold wire. The inner field is decorated with four strands of filigree, each consisting of an S&#45;shape with internally spiralled terminals. Damage to the mount can be found near one corner, where the base plate has torn and folded, with a loss of filigree from two of the strands. The filigree strands and tightly spiralled terminals suggests a date of 8th&#45;9th century.</full>

MOUNT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A copper&#45;alloy mount or fitting of early Anglo&#45;Saxon date, c. 475&#45;600.
The object is incomplete, possibly fragmentary. The fitting has a complete sub&#45;triangular arm with a sub&#45;triangular void/opening at the end. The arm is cast integral with a rectangular base, from which another arm emerged, though only the bend and broken base of the arm remains. Both arms project from the same length of the base, but at opposite ends. Between the arms is a triangular projection. The underside of the projection has a cylindical shank.
The face of the mount or fitting has three ring&#45;and&#45;dots stamped in its surface &#45; one in the centre of the base and one at the base of each arm. These ring&#45;and&#45;dot stamps are superimposed on incised linear grooves, two across the width of the base, and two across the width of the terminal of the complete arm.
In size and decoration and general form, it is similar to NCL&#45;F39FF6, though the detail varies, and there is no evidence of reuse.
In function, the object is probably a dress accessory or personal fitting. In appearance it is similar to the base of a girdle hanger/chatelaine, but smaller and the cast integral shank on the reverse makes such an identification unlikely. It also does not conform to known sleeve clasp forms, though a similar function may be more likely. Another possibility may be as a belt or strap fitting.</full>

<full>A cast lead&#45;alloy gaming piece of the Early Medieval period, probably Viking/Anglo&#45;Scandinavian.

The piece is conical with three wedge&#45; or claw&#45;like projections at the top, arranged fairly regularly every 120 degrees. The object is hollow, and it has been squeezed inward, distorting the circular shape of the base. <full>A cast iron ring, visible within a larger lump of iron corrosion, probably dating to the Early Medieval period.

The ring is less than half visible, but is circular or sub&#45;circular in section with a minimum diameter of 53mm.

X&#45;ray has revealed the full extent of the ring, as well as a possible interlinked but smaller second ring, and some other linear object with a rounded head.

This is probably related to another corroded lump of iron bearing a ring and sockets that has been tentatively dated to the 6th century, when there was a known episode of burial on the site.</full>

BROOCH</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A cast copper&#45;alloy small long brooch of 6th century date.

The brooch is incomplete, with the incomplete head and only a portion of the upper bow remaining. The bow was probably carinated with notched corners. The head had a square central plate, with integrally cast side and top plates. The lower edge of the sideplates seemed to have merged with the central plate, but only the base of the sideplates remain, and their shape is uncertain. The top of the sideplates, however, were notched, as is visible on one of the sidplates of this brooch. The base of the topplate remains as well. It can be speculated that they were fan&#45;shaped, based on the pattern of breakage, but this is only speculation. Three very faint stamped circles can be seen on the larger fragment of remaining sideplate.

The underside of the head bears an incomplete single lug that would have taken the hinge pin.</full>
