This axehead was found as a single, isolated find.

This piece was probably made circa 1500-1150 BC. The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan, the width expanding slightly towards the end of the blade, but tapers towards the butt end. The blade tips measure 30.9mm, while the butt end measures 21.1mm. The blade is flat and rather featureless, but two large flanges overhang each face, these are curved and very prominent. The palstave has no central stop, but measures 21.3mm x 27mm at its widest central measurement. There is no attachment loop visible. The butt end extends from the centre, tapering to a more rounded terminal. The butt end is also featureless. Neither the blade end or the butt end feature any form of sharpening or hammering. The sides appear to have lost the casting flash, with no trace of it being visible, as they may have been removed shortly after production.

The faces of the palstave are corroded but there are small patches of the original surfaces surviving. The butt measures approximately 48.1mm in length, it is very flat in comparison to other examples. The thickness of this central area measures 12.7mm.
The sides of the axe are chamfered from butt to blade on both sides. They are flat, with the chamfering occurring gradually. The chamfering however gives way to flanged chests which can be seen on both edges of the axe, on both surfaces. After the raised central area the axe extends into the blade end. The blade is flattened and shaped. It looks worn, but there is no evidence of sharpening. The blade measures 57.2mm from tip to tip. The tips flare out at the tips, forming almost a pelta shape. There is no evidence of decoration on the blade or any other part of the axe. The blade tips are also damaged and well worn.
It is probably an Aylesford type developed flat axe, dating from 2150-1500 BC. The arrowhead has been knapped out of flint and then intensively pressure flaked. The arrowhead has been bifacially worked into an arrowhead shape, with a sharp point, and straight, sharp edges. The flint is a light greyish-brown. This type of arrowhead dates to the Bronze Age (circa 2150 - 800). Whilst it is hard to define much more typological detail, there is substantial variation in the sizes and overall forms of the palstaves. Unfortunately, there has been relatively little intensive typological research regarding these palstaves since Smith (1959), Rowlands (1976) and Burgess (see Schmidt & Burgess 1981 for references). The deliberate placing of the palstaves in a pit concurs with broader patterns of metalwork deposition in the landscape. It is not thought that the three bronze sheet fragments and possible handle are associated with this deposition. It also seems unlikely that they date to the same period and are more probably post-medieval in date.

Conclusion

The objects formed a single original deposit or hoard with perhaps one dispersed from its original resting place through the actions of the plough. This material is eligible as Treasure under the new Treasure Order (2002) being a base-metal prehistoric find containing two or more metal objects.

Previous Entry

A cast copper-alloy rim fragment from a copper alloy vessel. The fragment measures 51.2mm blade tip to blade tip. The socket measures 32mm across. The cutting edge is corroded; therefore the original surface has been lost. The outer surfaces have a mid brownish-green patina. The object is noticeably less worn within the socket. The breaks are well worn. Socketed axes date to the Late Bronze Age. There is also damage or wear on the gouge furrow, largely caused by bronze disease but also faint striations can be seen in the furrow, possibly indicating sharpening. The gouge survives in a very good condition and much of the well-finished original surface still survives. The mouth of the socket is also experiencing some active corrosion; bronze disease is affecting the metal. The majority of the gouge is still covered with the original surface, which has a dark greenish-brown patina, but it is slightly pitted. The socket is empty. The socket is sub-circular. The depth of the socket is approximately 28mm to the socket end. The gouge has a single mouth-moulding. The casting flash has been trimmed but is still visible. The width of the gouge tapers down from approximately 16.1mm to 13.6mm. The blade and the cutting edge are slightly damaged and corroded.
