The axe has a subrectangular socket mouth with a moulded rim and single attachment loop. There appears to be dark, organic material within the socket mouth. A casting seam is visible above the fracture on the axe blade. The axe has fractured obliquely; the two pieces were found by a metal detectorist approximately 1m apart. There are small areas of pitting across the surface containing a powdery green corrosion product. The blade is an unusual shape, having lateral indentations similar to another socketed axehead from the Nettleham hoard (P.J.Davey, Bronze Age Metalwork from Lincolnshire, p.103). The blade is comparable in form to earlier palstave axeheads, and this object may therefore represent a transitional form between the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Colin Burgess described this as metalwork stage XI (Wilburton). The most recent and generally accepted revised chronology by Needham (1996) would place it in his Period 6, 1150-950 cal BC. The interior of the butt displays frequent linear grooves caused by wear, though it is not clear at what point in history this wear occured. The grooves share the same patina as the rest of the axe, suggesting that the wear is of some antiquity however. There is also a similar grooved strip from The Hamel, Oxford, Oxfordshire excavated from a layer which yielded Beaker pottery of the Early Bronze Age (Palmer 1980, 124-134). The spearhead is complete. The blade shows slight damage along both edges but otherwise is in good condition and still relatively sharp. The damage appears to be post-deposition as the rest of the spear is unworn. The socket is also undamaged. The spearhead has a smooth chocolate-brown patina with sporadic patches of bright green corrosion. The head is leaf-shaped and has a pronounced midrib. The socket is has a wide diameter compared to the overall size of the spearhead and the loops, which are flattened, are situated roughly half way along the shaft. The spear is decorated with six or seven transverse notches between the bottom of the blade and the side loop on either side. A perimeter of triangular notches decorated the shaft opening. Side-looped spearheads are Greenwell and Brewis' Class IV and date to the early Middle Bronze Age. They are likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Penard metalwork assemblages, corresponding to Needham's (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The spearhead was likely to have been short and similar to Savory (1980) nos. 227 - 230, which Savory argues are of Acton Park metal, although no. 228 gave an analysis suggesting Penard metal. A side-looped spearhead from the Thames at Mortlake (DoB 31) has been radio-carbon dated by Needham et al (1997) producing an early radiocarbon date of 3225+/- 65BP (OxA-5948) 1680-1400BC with a 95% confidence rating. In Richard Davis' volume on Early and Middle Bronze Age spearheads (forthcoming) laterally notched decoration on the side of the socket is noted on 15 examples of standard side looped spearheads. These examples have a geographical weighting to Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The closest parallel (geographically) comes from Tetford Fen, Lincolnshire. The spearhead from Tetford is now in 'the Collection' (Lincoln Museum), accession number 1954.48. The butt is incomplete and now marked by a roughly angular line. The break bears the same patination as the rest of the axe showing that it was broken in antiquity, or perhaps originally mis-cast. One corner of the butt is visible; the other is missing. The half-end has two pronounced flanges on either side. The crest of the flange is straight rather than inward curving as sometimes seen on other axes. The septum is smooth and seemingly unworn. At the end of the septum is a moulded stop-ridge set transversely across the body. The ridge is concave in profile. Beyond the ridge is a half-rounded ('shield-shaped') concave panel containing three moulded ribs. These ribs are set horizontally. On either edge of the axe half-way down the line of the panel is a moulded nick or knop. The blade is flared and the surface is smooth. The blade tips are well-developed and intact. The edge bevel is wide and the cutting edge is suprisingly sharp. Shield-like decoration on the blade just below the stop is a characteristic of Group II palstaves (Schmidt and Burgess, 1981, The Axes of Scotland and Northern England, p.117). Group I and II palstaves were the primary forms introduced to Britain in the Middle Bronze Age (ibid.p.119). This axe can be assigned to the Acton Park or early Taunton phase, circa 1450-1300 BC.
