A complete silver pendant of unknown date. The pendant is conical with five sides, tapering at the top where a band and suspension ring have been attached. The band and loop are both decorated with horizontal grooves. The base is concave with a hole pierced in the centre. Each facet has cross-hatch decoration surrounded by a raised frame. It appears to have been made from a silver sheet which has been soldered down one long side. The base, suspension loop and band were then attached. The pendant shows areas of worn decoration and casting flaws. There is a little tarnish but it i…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy object of probable prehistoric date. The sub-conical object is hollow, has a fluted outer surface and a squared off, possibly truncated, distal end. There is a single perforation, probably a rivet hole, which is located a short distance along from the opening. Measurements: 20mm long,12.1mm wide, 7.81g. This is almost certainly one half of a so-called 'moustache-shaped' object, a complete example of which is PAS record DENO-0E9FA1. These pieces are thought to be either scabbard chapes or items of personal adornment and to date from the Late Bronze A…

Length of silver wire, circular in section, tapering at one end, blunt at the other. The wire has been bent into an overlapping ring. Date: uncertain, but probably more than 300 years old. Discussion: although the object has a superficial resemblance to Roman snake rings, there are too few diagnostic features to be certain of this. External d.: 19.2mm Internal d.: 13mm Wt.: 2.43g Note: this item is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal so qualifies as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996. An assemblage of four lead-alloy weights. The weights are all of the same form, being sub-cylindrical, with the widest point at the centre and a gradual taper towards either end. A longitudinal perforation of circular cross section extends down the centre of each weight. The length of the four varies between 26 and 28mm, and the width, between 16.9mm and 17.2mm. The total weight of the assemblage is 163.84g. According to Helen Geake, 'Perforated weights of other shapes (e.g. long hollow cylinders, or thin rods with a perforation at one end) are very imperfectly understood at pre…

A carved piece of ornamental stonework, dating from the medieval to post-medieval periods and probably representing a moulded detail from a tomb or other ecclesiastical feature. The following description is by Chris Green: 'The object itself is very incomplete but appears to be part of an engaged half-column with moulding; the neat chiselled dressing looks unfinished. Part of a tomb or similar ???? , presumed medieval or later. I had a good look at this under the microscope, and showed it to Haydon Bailey (President Herts Geological Soc). An undated copper-alloy ring. The object is oval in both plan and cross section, the band gradually widening from one side to the other. The dark green patination is consistent with a prehistoric to Roman date. It is, however, uncertain as to whether this is a finger ring or whether it served a different purpose, such as a harness fitting. Width: 30.2mm; length/depth: 24.3mm; maximum height of band: 4.6mm. The plate has a convex upper surface and flat underside, and all surfaces have a white metal coating. Length: 25.8mm; width: 16.3mm; depth: 7.3mm. Weight: 2.97g. An incomplete copper-alloy handle attachment from a vessel. The lowermost element of the piece is a horizontal 'strap' which retains its original curvature. The widest part of this strap is at the right-hand end, whose surface is also slightly higher than the projecting arm to the left and has a raised and grooved rim at the top and bottom. The aforementioned left-hand arm is parallel-sided at its inner end, but after the halfway point the sides converge towards the irregular break. The right-hand end is also broken, the concavity at the centre of this edge probably representing a…

A body sherd from a handmade coarseware ceramic vessel. The irregular sherd has an uneven surface and possible corded decoration, as well as raised areas. The core fabric is light yellowish-grey and tempered with sand and grog. The surfaces are reddish-brown. Length of sherd: 34.8mm; width: 34.2mm; thickness: 11.7mm. Weight: 13g. Handmade pottery is a feature of both prehistoric and early-medieval assemblages. Given the size of the sherd, an accurate date cannot be assigned to this piece.
