The remains of the brooch consist of a intact double-lugged head with a semi-circular spring cover and two short crossbar arms; following the brooch head, there is a large central rib running partway down the brooch body, with a longer vertical ridge underneath which runs the length of the brooch body. The brooch tapers to a flattened end, with no foot plate or point. The reverse surface holds the complete remains of an unperforated sub-triangular catchplate with its external edge curled inwards to hold the pin. The copper alloy spring and spring chord are intact, with four coils to either side of the lugs and the chord passes through the secondary head lug; a copper alloy axial bar holds the spring in place within the spring cover. The only element missing from the brooch is its pin, which has broken off from the spring in an old break. The brooch measures 37.5 mm long; 16.9 mm maximum width at spring cover; 4.5 mm wide at brooch-end; 8.9 mm thick at spring; 10.1 mm maximum thickness at catchplate; it weighs 5.8 grams.
For an identical example, see Hattatt 2007, Fig. 156, No. 872.</description><classification>Colchester Two-piece</classification><fromdate>43</fromdate><todate>99</todate><workflow>4</workflow><created>2012-11-12T12:20:05Z</created><updated>2012-11-12T12:22:37Z</updated><weight>5.8</weight><thickness>8.9</thickness><width>16.9</width><length>37.5</length><quantity>1</quantity><county>EAST SUSSEX</county><district>LEWES</district><parish>PLUMPTON</parish><fourFigure>TQ3513</fourFigure><fourFigureLat>50.900703</fourFigureLat><fourFigureLon>-0.081539</fourFigureLon><imagedir>images/stephaniesmith/</imagedir><creator>Stephanie Smith</creator><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><filename>SUSS-0E9753ColchTwo-Piece.jpg</filename><thumbnail>403784</thumbnail><regionName>SOUTH EAST AND LONDON</regionName></result><result><district>LEWES</district><objecttype>METAL WORKING DEBRIS</objecttype><county>EAST SUSSEX</county><created>2008-03-06T14:27:38Z</created><regionName>SOUTH EAST AND LONDON</regionName><fromdate>55</fromdate><materialTerm>Lead</materialTerm><length>11.3</length><filename>SUSS-FFDEE6.JPG</filename><thumbnail>170945</thumbnail><creator>Laura Burnett</creator><identifier>Laura Burnett</identifier><width>19.1</width><id>211894</id><old_findID>SUSS-FFDEE6</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>PLUMPTON</parish><weight>10.1</weight><imagedir>images/lburnett/</imagedir><updated>2011-02-24T13:49:34Z</updated><quantity>1</quantity><todate>1850</todate><broadperiod>ROMAN</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>50.936418</fourFigureLat><thickness>12.6</thickness><description> Lead sprue from casting.
