Post-medieval copper alloy handle, probably from a knife; elaborate shaped openwork terminal with projecting trapezoidal knop and large sub-keyhole-shaped perforation. Sub-rectangular-sectioned with both faces slightly fluted and tapering towards a break across a split to accommodate the missing iron blade. Very similar to an example from Happisburgh (HER 17351; NMS-80C055), found in March/April 2009. There is a complete example illustrated on page 29 of the 2014 (3rd) edition of Benet's, ref. KF-42777. Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post-medieval copper alloy strap fitting or mount: a flat bi-lobed plate with two iron-filled attachment holes and a forward facing blunt hook engaged with a D-sectioned and ovoid ring, which is decorated with closely spaced radial grooves on the convex front face. Although clearly related to a varied class of fittings associated with sword belts (e.g. Read 2001 fig. 25) this is rather too small and flimsy. Perhaps it was used for the suspension of a chatelaine. Plate 27 x 10mm. Ring external diameter 16 - 19mm. Dates to the 16th - 17th century.

Post-medieval lead cloth seal, circular, diameter 32mm. Ornate shield with three crowns, with date, 15 to the left, 7[-] to the right, inscription around ]COLCESTER IO[. A seal of the Dutch immigrant community. The date 1571 refers to the year when this type of seal started to be manufactured, and the design was in use up to 1728 (Egan 1994, 29), so this example dates to between AD 1571 and 1728.
