Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill. The copper alloy brooch has a semi-cylindrical wings which are undecorated. The axis bar has the spring coiled around it eleven times and the pin is missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is an integral perforated lug. The bowhead is shallow in profile and is slightly hump-like. The bow is decorated with a low-relief crescents, but the overall motif is unclear due to corrosion. The bow is semi-circular and is broken above the approximate midpoint.
The surface of the brooch has a light green patina which is abraded and incomplete.
It measures 18.57mm in length, 23.81mm in width, and weighs 5.84g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120. It is not in good enough condition to give it a Mackreth classification.
