Unique ID: IOW-C46390

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy dress hook (c. 1500-c. 1650). Read Class E, Type 5 (trefoil).

The hook element is largely missing.

The main plate is an openwork trefoil hatched/rope-work knot design which is 'D'-shaped in cross-section. The integral attachment loop is sub-rectangular, flat on the reverse. A pellets on the attachment loop, possibly representing roses, form terminals to each end of the knot. A portion of the integral hook is trapezoidal in cross-section, flat on the reverse. The reverse is plain and pitted.

This dress hook has a green patina with small areas of corrosion. The break is old.

Length: 25.0mm; width: 17.9mm; thickness: 2.0mm. Weight: 1.92g.

Similar example are illustrated in Read (Read 2008: 110, refs: 436; 437 (anthropomorphic); 438).
