Medieval buckle ( mid 13th to 14th centuries): A fragment of a cast copper alloy buckle which is the apex of the loop. In plan this fragment is sub-triangular with a wide, rectangular notch. The notch is decorated with three rows of small notches. The notch is bordered by a groove. Either side of the notch there is an integral triangular section whose lower corners tapers to a broken frame and the upper corner terminates with a flat knop. These sections are decorated with a fine notches. The frame has a mottled matte mid green patina.
The buckle measures 10.81mm long, 21.31mm wide across the buckle frame. It weighs 2.25g.
Whitehead (Whitehead, R. 1996 Buckles 1250-1800 Greenlight Publishing) illustrates a similar buckle, No. 111 dating it to the mid 13th to 14th centuries.
