Copper alloy VESSEL. A cast copper alloy decorative pouring spout in the shape of a dog’s head. The spout emerges from the mouth, is circular in section and has an internal diameter of 6.12mm. The head has vertically projecting ears that run down the sides of the head which are oval in shape. The head has a prominent brow and a ridge running along its length. The eyes are slightly recessed. The underside of the dog’s head is flat. The spout is narrowed behind the head (neck) which slopes downwards at an angle of about 45 degrees, the top half of this extended neck is open where it would have been attached to a vessel. The neck is pointed oval in cross-section. Similar spouts are illustrated in Bailey (1997, p57-59). It is believed they were used as pourers on leather bottles secured by a leather strap. Date: Medieval - circa 1400-1540 Dimensions: 23.0 mm x 18.11mm (dogs head), 6.12mm (spout internal diameter), 52.70mm (length of spout to opening) Weight: 58.06g
