Treasure case: 2016 T1059: Disclaimed, returned to finder.
Description: A silver domed thimble of two-piece construction. The thimble has a crack down one side where the two ends of the strip of silver that forms the lower, ring shaped section, were connected. There is also a circular hole near the rim at the back, presumably to allow it to be suspended. The top and sides are decorated with regularly spaced small circular indents arranged in rows on the sides and a grid on the top. There are plain areas where the top and sides meet and down the join on the side. At the rim is a plain band then a pellet border and above this a frieze of repetitive fleurs-de-lis interrupted by a small panel containing two hearts. Both hearts are supported by putti. The hearts are inscribed D S and above the hearts are the maker's mark: I D.
Dimensions: The thimble is 14.2mm in diameter at the base, 11.9mm at the top, 15.5mm tall and 0.7mm thick; it weighs 2.87g.
Discussion: Several similar thimbles with the same design and various maker's marks have gone through the Treasure process and been dated to the 17th century such as IOW-7E8237 (2011 T738) and IOW-B0F192 (2009 T249), both from the Isle of Wight, the latter also pierced, SUSS-23D845 (2011 T14) from East Sussex and LIN-556645 (2016 T465) from Lincolnshire. SUSS-109052 dated to c.1730-1800 AD may have a similar maker's mark.
Subsequent action after recording: Returned to finder after being disclaimed as Treasure
