A complete lead palm guard of post-medieval date. The palm guard is sub-ovate in plan with a D-shaped cross section. The rounded side has a deep figure of eight depression while the other is flat and undecorated.
The metal is a dark greyish-white colour and is worn. The object 73.9mm long, 56.2mm wide, 7mm thick and weighs 136g.
Such objects would have been wrapped in cloth of leather with a hole above the depressions. They were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm from the force of using awls and punches in an industry such as leatherworking.
Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast in oyster shells as evidenced in Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 in which the shell remains.
