Object type certainty: Certain

A fragment of Early Anglo-Saxon decorative metalwork that may be a mount or a pendant. The artefact has been cast from copper alloy, and the obverse retains a tiny amount (2%) of its original gilded surface. It appears that a loop at the top has broken off so that only the base of the loop remains; the main body is thicker around the base of the loop. The obverse, which is slightly convex, has a stylised face, eyes, brows, nose (and possible moustache), hair (and possibly an ear) and cheeks. Around the face is a plain border, itself suggesting that the pendant was once circular. The reverse is undecorated and gently concave, with a rough surface from the original casting. The artefact has a dull green colour, and is fairly well preserved. This decoration is Anglo Saxon ‘style 1’ zoomorphic art, and as such, can be dated to the 5th or 6th centuries. It bears a resemblance to the designs seen on button brooches, and might perhaps be related to these.
