BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD

Unique ID: IOW-FB307D

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (c. 2500 BC-c. 1500 BC).

This arrowhead is sub-triangular in plan and an elongated pointed-oval shape in cross-section and side view. The barbs and tang are straight at their ends. It has been knapped using both direct and indirect percussion techniques. Both long sides of the arrowhead have been finely retouched to create sharp edges. The retouch can be classified as invasive, sub-parallel and low angled.

This implement is in extremely good condition without any damage. When held to the light it has a reddish tinge and is semi-translucent.

Length: 32.5mm; width: 24.9mm; thickness: 5.0mm. Weight: 3.21g.

Similar flint barb and tanged arrowheads are associated with the Beaker phase of the Late / final Neolithic and Early Bronze Age c. 2500 BC-1500 BC. This example fits into the sub-classification of non-Fancy B&T arrowheads best described as Sutton types (Butler 2005: 162-165, after Green (1980).
