VESSEL

Unique ID: LVPL949

Object type certainty: Certain

Decorative handle from bronze bowl or dish. Sharply curving, oval in section, flattened point of attachment at bottom. The top terminates in a high relief moulded head of a cherub with hair surrounding the face. Behind the head is a thumb-stop which is quite low but may have originally been higher. Between the thumb-stop and a ridge further back is a panel of incised palmettes. The rest of the handle is plain. "Wings" extend from the cheeks of the head which would have increased the point of attachment. A groove under the chin and continuing on underside of 'wings' marks the point of attachment to the rim. One of the 'wings' is missing and the remaining wing was probably originally larger.
