RIC IX 27e\/45b","notes":"There has been much debate about when silver siliquae were clipped.  However, analysis of the Terling Hoard suggests a date after AD 404.  Some feel that it could have been slightly earlier, after 402, when the mint of Milan ceased to strike siliquae.  It might have started in the reign of Constantine III, 407-11, when the Province of Britannia finally collapsed.  The clippings were apparently used to make copies of siliquae \u2013 of the same quality silver.  Over 100 silver siliquae have been recorded on the PAS database \u2013 this has been a crucial addition to our knowledge of late Roman Britain because prior to AD 2000 very few were known as site-finds.  This suggests that siliquae circulated as normal currency, possibly for some time after the Roman administration ceased c. AD 410.
