A copper alloy one piece La Tène III type brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date. The object consists of a single strip of copper alloy forming the bow, spring, pin and catchplate.
The brooch tapers in width towards the spring which consists of one and a half coils of the object before tapering to form the pin. The pin is complete and is decorated on the outer face wish a series of shallow transverse scratches.
The bow is lentoid in plan and is flat. The outer face of the bow is decorated where it expands with two diagonal bands formed of a series of ridges and grooves. The upper band crosses over the lower forming a saltire cross shape. Above and below the cross is a circular raised pellet or stud with a corresponding circular depression at the rear of the bow. The pellet has a diameter of 1.62mm. Each edge of the bow is decorated with a series of small notches where the bow expands outwards. The upper and lower bow is undecorated.
The lower bow of the object the bow tapers and curves down and round to form the catchplate which is distorted but complete. File marks are visible on the upper bow and the rear of the object. It has a smooth dark green patina and is in very good condition. Similar examples can be found in Hattatt, (2000), p291, no.743.
