SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SUSS-F5ACE8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A personal seal matrix, with a short conical handle, made of silver. The seal matrix stands to a height of 19.6mm. The die is flat and oval in shape. The reverse of the die has six facets. One of the facets has the letters RK, engraved into the surface of the silver. Another facet has two engraved rings, one inside the other. On the handle there is a small rib just before the loop. The handle has a round loop, which has a spherical knop terminal. The loop has been slightly bent out of position.
The face of the die has been engraved with a flower. The flower has two leaves and a large flower. Around the flower there is an engraved oval lines, which is surrounded by an oval of dots. The die measures 17.1mm x 14.6mm.

This seal matrix was reported as a potential treasure find, but on examination by Judy Rudoe (the Curator of Renaissance & Later Collections at the British Museum) it was discovered to date from the first half of the 18th century and was therefore disclaimed from the treasure process without inquest. The finder and the landowner decided to donate the seal matrix to Littlehampton Museum, where it is now on display.
