Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type and of 1st -2nd century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the foot, catch-plate and pin (with a surviving length of 33.0mm, a surviving depth of 9.2mm and a weight of 3.2g). The top of the hinged pin survives between the tubular wings, now slightly truncated (with a surviving width of 16.2mm and a diameter of 3.0mm). There is no decoration now discernible on the wings. A small stub on the head of the brooch is likely to be the remnants of an integral chain-loop. The upper bow is convex across its width and has a grooved border. The sides are straight and gradually convergent to the leg (with a width at the head of 8.8mm and a thickness of 1.8mm). The rear of bow has a subtle vertical groove. The front of the bow is decorated with two, raised lozenge panels, both enhanced with cross-hatched grooves. The top of the leg is of sub-triangular section and the catch-plate arcs from one side of the leg but has broken before the catch. The surface is pitted with a dark-green patina.
The brooch form corresponds to Hull's Type 106, which Hattatt (1987, pp 100-4) sees as having a distribution concentrated on the Lower Severn, although this example would be a northern outlier.
