A cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch, dating from AD 75 - 175. The bow of the brooch is triangular in section and the shoulder is decorated with an acanthus button moulding consisting of a central prominent, transverse ridge flanked by a row of three petals above and below. There is a double collar above and below the button. The moulding is on the front of the bow only apart from the central ridge. The head is oval, with a stepped flange on the outer edge, in the centre of which is a small projection. The back of the head carries an integral loop holding an axis bar (obscured by corrosion) and a spring pin. Two turns of the spiring survive. The upper bow is decorated with a central incised line along its length and the lower bow has oblique incised lines on one face only. The catch plate is bent and broken. The brooch has a smooth, grey green patina. It is 36mm long, 15.9mm wide and 18.5mm thick. 7.73g.
