A cast copper alloy (with a high lead content) pommel probably from a dagger or possibly from a sword, and dating from the Post Medieval period, about AD 1500 - 1700. The pommel has an oval base which is hollow and would have held the tang. It has an internal width of 25mm and thickness of 10.2mm. The two main faces are rectangular with a convex top. They are decorated with ridges and grooves, and across the curved top is a band of incised Xs, possibly with an inlay of niello or similar. There is the stub of a projection on each side face. One break is patinated and one is recent, revealing red copper coloured metal. The recently broken projection is surviving, though detached. It is a wing like projection which is curved in plan and flat in section. It angles back from the blade beyond the end of the pommel. There are traces of a scrollwork decoration on it. There is a small (4mm diameter) circle in the top of the pommel where the end of the tang would have been fixed. The metal has a dark grey patina, but much of the detail is obscured by soil and corrosion. The pommel is 22.2mm long, 41.9mm wide without the broken projection, and 15.6mm thick. The projection brings the width to about 57mm. 37.7g. Compare NLM-CEF7B5 and NMS-4DD0C7 though neither is an exact match.
