A copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's class A type 1 (Trewhiddle style) dating from the Early Medieval period, AD 800 - 900. There are two rivet holes at the split attachment end; below these is a palmette, and then a Trewhiddle-style backward facing animal. Traces of niello survive on the background of the central panel. The closed end is a zoomorphic terminal with ears, eyes and nostrils clearly moulded. The strap end has a length of 34.4mm, is 11.9mm wide and 3.8mm thick. 4.27g. The metal has a grey green patina. One corner of the attachment end is missing, as is much of the back plate of the split. For reference see The Finds Research Group AD700-1700, datasheets 25-40, no 32 p. 2-3.
