Copper alloy stud with a plano-convex head, cirrcular in plan and oval on section with a flattened base. From the centre of the base projects the stub of an integral circular sectioned shaft ending in an old break. The head is decorated with four incised semi-circular lines running around the edge, the ends of each line touch to next line giving a lozenge shape in the centre. The head is 12.5mm in diameter and 8.4mm thick, the entire piece is 11.1mm long; it weighs 5.46 grams.
The piece appears too robust to be a pin head so is interpreted as a stud. Crummy (1983:115) illustrates a very similar, although undecorated, example from a Roman context in Colchester, no.2995, and suggests they were used on furniture. A Medieval date, as for SOM-75C508 and SUR-451EF5 on this database, can also not be ruled out. While some similar button and loop fastener heads are known, such as GLO-367842 they are usually wider with a flatter base and, mostly have the loop attached off centre.
