STRAP END

Cast copper alloy strap end of Medieval date. The strap end has a straight, rectangular attachment end from which it tapers gradually but consistently to the rounded terminal. There is a split at the attachment end to create a slot between the front and back for the strap, this is filled with mud. This split then runs as a seam down one side and round the terminal indicating the strap end is made of one piece of sheet folded longitudinally with the fold down one long edge and the two edges of the sheet meeting along the other edge. There is a single separate circular copper alloy rivet through the centre of the attachment end. The ends of the rivet are flush with the front and back. The strap end appears plain and undecorated with some parallel scratches but no clear design. The edges are chipped in places. It is 38.9 long and 12.2 mm wide, 2.0 mm thick at the terminal and 4.1 at the attachment end. It weighs 4.89 grams including the mud.

Egan and Pritchard (1991:161) suggest such strap ends were produced in the 14th century and illustrate a similar, although longer, example, no.604, and record an example more similar in length to this example, no.603.
