A flint tranchet adze of probable Early Mesolithic date, c 9000-8000 BC . The implement is parallel-sided along most of its length, slightly tapering at the top. The adze is of irregular oval cross section. On either side of the axe the flake removal scars angle downwards from the broad, roughly defined central ridge. The removal of the transverse sharpening flake has created a steep, wedge-like blade. The surface of the flint is mottled, light grey to creamy-white in colour. This type of adze is often described as a Thames pick.
The adze is 154.3mm long, 44.3mm wide, 53.6mm wide and weighs 620 grams.
