Unique ID: SF-9C6DFB

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Hod Hill or derivative brooch. Only the head and top of the bow survive, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The head is flat, rectangular in form, and rolled forward to encase the now missing bar that would have enabled the pin to hinge through a central rectangular pin slot. At its base the head narrows towards the bow. This is rectangular in form, D-shaped in section and has moulded decoration on its front face comprising three prominent transverse ribes separated by grooves. Traces of an added white metal coating are visible on the front face of the brooch. It measures 14.74mm in length, 14.90mm in width at head, 9.98mm in width at bow, 2.64mm in thickness at bow, and 1.54g in weight.

This is an incomplete Roman Hod Hill or derivative brooch. It is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
