A worn and incomplete copper-alloy Roman Colchester bow brooch. Half of the spring, the pin and catchplate are missing due to old breaks. The wings are short, rectangular in form and section, and separated at their centre by an integrally cast rear facing hook that curves forwards onto the head of the brooch. Beneath the hook is an integrally cast spring and spring chord that extends to two surviving coils, the remainder of the spring and pin now missing due to old breaks. The bow is oval sectioned, undecorated and tapers to a sharp pointed foot that is missing most of its catchplate due to old breaks. The entire object has worn surfaces and measures 44.35mm in length, 11.13mm in width at wings/spring, 4.69mm in width at bow, 3.20mm in thickness at bow, and 4.34g in weight.
This is an incomplete Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is similar to examples published by Hattatt (1989: nos. 14-15) and from Hacheston (e.g. Blagg et al., 2004: no. 63). The brooch is of 1st century AD date, c. 25-60 AD.
