Medieval copper alloy strap clasp fastener fragment, 22mm long, 20mm wide and 5mm thick The object is in fair condition and weigh s 2.86grams.
The object represents the decorated end of a rectangular clasp fastener. It consists of a sloping rectangular plate which is decorated with a stylised crown. This decoration is very worn and not well accomplished. The crown is represented by a scallloped edge with vertical depressions between each round protrusion. Below this is a stylised human face in relief. At the lower end of this plate part of the rectangular frame remains. Where it joins the plate there is a slight rounded protrusion at each side.
These objects have been recorded at various later medieval sites and are dated to 1300-1400 (Egan, G. 2002 Buckles in. Egan and Pritchard 2002. pp 50-123) . For a better executed example see WMID-BD6FC9.
