Roman copper alloy anthropomorphic mount
The mount is of sub-hemispherical form and appears to be complete (with a maximum diameter across its length of 34.6mm, a depth of 10.8mm, a thickness of 1 - 2mm and a weight of 17.8g). The mount depicts the face of a deity in cast relief. The hair has a prominent centre-parting and is further divided into six-lobes around the edge of the mount and the detail is enhanced with grooves. Much of the facial detail is worn, particularly the eyes, which appear to have been almond-shaped and moulded before being further defined with applied decoration. The nose is defined by flanking grooves and the mouth as a simple incised line. At the base, to one side are a series of diagonal lines of uncertain reason. The rear of the mount is dished and hollow with traces of a white-metal deposit on one side, probably the remains of an attachment solder. The surface has a mid-green patina with a pale-green corrosion.
The mount is likely to have decorated furniture or a vessel and may depict a cherub or similar.
