Medieval, cast copper alloy strap end with a ball, or globular shaped terminal on which are five, spike-like projections (four lateral, one at the end). On the other side of the ball are the truncated remains of a 7.2mm wide, bifurcated, attachment plate, Between this and the ball is a transvers moulding. Length 22.2mm, Diameter 10.9mm, Mass 6.42g.
This 'spiked' strap end may be compared to an example from Langford, Notts. DENO-429256 which was similarly undated. The dating of these strapends is difficult as none have been found in a useful context but a related strap end, from Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire, terminates in a Romanesque animal head, suggesting a date in second half of the 11th or the 12th cent. (WILT-8F33A4). A date range for these strap ends of c. 1050 - 1400 seems likely.
