A lead alloy and iron weight of probably Post Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1800. The weight is a circular, conical shape with a flattened top and concave sides (bell-shaped). The base is slightly hollow, with the centre and the rim projecting further. The top has two stubs of iron sticking out of it, suggesting that it originally had an iron suspension loop. It could therefore have been used as a standing weight or as a suspended weight. Weights of this type are difficult to date closely as they were in use for a long period of time. Though a Post Medieval date is most likely, it could date from the Roman period onwards. Compare Biggs and Withers 'Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection' (pp. 32, nos. 72-75). The object has a mass of 146g (at 5 and 1/8 oz, it does not appear to be a standard weight in the system of ounces and pounds. It is 48.5mm tall and 31mm diameter.
