Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date
The brooch is near complete, missing the spring and pin (with a length of 57.8mm, a depth of 24.0mm and a weight of 30.0g). The missing spring was secured around a central, pierced lug with the chord beneath and the rear of the head is concave. The trumpet-head is oval (16.2mm high and 20.4mm wide) with a pin at the apex, probably to retain a swivelling chain-loop, now lost. The upper-bow is of oval section and has cast decoration, symmetrical about a vertical central rib. The mouldings comprise a trumpet-scroll on each side, terminating on one end in curvilinear trumpet-ribs, which continue onto the underside of the bow. At the other end, above the button, the mouldings diverge to form a recess of droplet form. The central vertical rib has a linear groove, now worn. It is possible that the mouldings on the upper-bow are representative of a stylised animal head, possibly a horse or similar.
The mid-bow has a button of oval disc form (15.4mm wide and 12.5mm deep), which appears to have been undecorated. Smaller mouldings flank the central rib above and below and separate the button from the upper-bow and leg. All three ribs continue on to the rear of the bow. The leg is near-straight and is of triangular section, with straight convergent sides. The leg has a prominent linear central rib and each side is decorated with an undulating rib, defining D-shaped cells each side. The base of the leg is defined by a further rib, which again continues on the rear. The catch-plate is complete (with a height of 8.4mm) and is placed at the centre of the leg, arcing from the rib at the rear of the button. The foot is of knobbed form (10.0mm diameter) and the underside is concave with a central pellet, which extends beyond the sides of the foot. The surface has a mid to dark-brown patina with much of the silvering or tinning surviving on the surface.
