An incomplete and worn copper-alloy Early-Medieval strap end of G Thomas Class A, Type 2. It is missing part of the attachment end due to old breaks, now worn.
It is flat and triangular. The attachment end is split. The front face is decorated with an incised border that contains incised cross-hatched decoration. This extends towards the base of the plate where there is a moulded zoomorphic terminal. The terminal comprises a series of three unevenly punched semi-circular motifs. Beneath this is a projecting zoomorphic head with an elongated, faceted snout.
This strap end measures 42.67mm in length, 9.85mm in width, 2.15mm in thickness,5.37g in weight.
Its form and decorative elements indicate it belongs in Thomas's Class A strap ends with convex sided plate and zoomorphic terminal, the lack of enamelling or niello suggesting it falls into his Class A Type 2 strap ends (Thomas, 2003, p. 2). There is a similar example recorded on the PAS database (SF-ACC0D3).
