An incomplete copper-alloy Early-Medieval strap end of G Thomas Class A, type 5. It is missing part of the niello and silver wire decoration due to old breaks, now worn.
The attachment end is split and has a pair of circular rivet holes. In the centre is a tear-drop shaped field, still containing traces of niello, with two inlaid tear-drops of silver wire. To either side is a parallel rectangular longitudinal field, still containing fragments of niello, which are inlaid with alternating U-shapes of silver wire. The terminal is zoomorphic, consisting of two adjacent protruding oval ears. Beneath these is a rectangular forehead and snout. To either side of the forhead is a large oval eye. At the terminal of the snout is a pair of circular grooves to represent nostrils. The back face is undecorated.
This strap end measures 37.23mm in length, 11.43mm in width, 3.65mm in thickness, 4.65g in weight.
Thomas Class A type 5 strap ends are most commonly found in Suffolk and Norfolk and appear to be of East Anglian origin (Thomas, 2003, pp.3, fig 1, no 11-12).
