Five incomplete copper alloy mounts, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1700).
The mounts consist of a diamond or lozenge shaped front plate, with an integral square sectioned attachment spike, located in the centre of the reverse. The attachment spikes are incomplete, all with the point missing. The breaks are not recent. The attachment spikes of two of the mounts are bent at a 30 and 40 degree angle. The decoration on the front of the mount consists of a plain diamond shaped border around the edge. Inside the border is a four petalled flower with a central pellet. On one of these mounts there is evidence of some silvering, which was most likely present on all of the mounts here.
Mount 1:
Length: 25.4 mm
Width: 19.5 mm (width of attachment spike: 3.3 mm)
Thickness: 1.8 mm (including attachment spike: 12.6 mm)
Weight: 2.7 g
Mount 2:
Length: 26.1 mm
Width: 20.2 mm (Width of attachment spike: 3.2 mm)
Thickness: 2.2 mm (including attachment spike: 15.9 mm)
Weight: 3.0 g
Mount 3:
Length: 25.5 mm
Width: 19.3 mm (Width of attachment spike: 3.2 mm)
Thickness: 1.7 mm (including attachment spike: 15.9 mm)
Weight: 2.9 g
Mount 4:
Length: 25.7 mm
Width: 18.8 mm (Width of attachment spike: 3.2 mm)
Thickness: 2.2 mm (including attachment spike: 9.7 mm)
Weight: 3.4 g
Mount 5:
Length: 23.9 mm
Width: 18 mm (Width of attachment spike: 2.7 mm)
Thickness: 1.8 mm (including attachment spike: 13.1 mm)
Weight: 2.3 g
The mounts vary in colour but most are dark green, with varying surface patina. Mount 4 shows evidence of silvering. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Several similar lozenge shaped mounts have been recorded on the PAS database, including: SF-C41896; SUSS-D30253; SUSS-3A5111, WMID-8B2242 and SUSS-9AB2D7. All are considered to be Post Medieval in dating (AD 1500 to AD 1700).
