An incomplete copper alloy seal matrix, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1702 to AD 1901).
Around 50% of the seal matrix is present, with most of the fob handle missing. The die is complete and oval in shape. The device is unclear but probably depicts either a bird or a rabbit. The fob handle was originally ornate openwork in style, with foliate scrollwork on the sides and an ovolo terminal. Only the base of the openwork is present with a triangular knop in the centre, and the base of both sides.
It measures 13.5 mm in height, 15.5 mm wide and 14.5 mm thick. It weighs 5.0 g.
The seal matrix is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Due to the level of abrasion, it was not possible to take an impression of this seal matrix.
Typically seal matrixes of this style and quality are dated from the later 18th century into the Victorian era. Other examples of fob seals with similar handles on this database are WMID-080672, IOW-CBB097, SF-E96797, YORYM-87F620, WILT-C0B4B5,BH-344CA1and ESS-3BF212.
