An incomplete, copper alloy Roman brooch of Dragonesque type, dating from AD 75 - 175. The remaining portion consists of the central body and one of the zoomorphic terminals. The body is decorated with eight enamelled cells. There are four central, rectangular cells flanked by a pair of teardrop shaped cells at each end of the body. Enamel remains in all four cells; blue enamel alternating with a colour now decayed to black. The zoomorphic terminal is in the form of an animal head with a raised ear upturned snout forming a loop where it joins to the brow. The chin is linked to the body by a strut. There is a very small, circular enamelled cell on the outer edge of the small loop to create the eye. Traces of black enamel remain in this cell. The second zoomorphic head and the pin have broken away and are missing. The remaining portion of the brooch is 28.1mm long, 15.1mm wide and 3.2mm thick. It weighs 3.21gm.
Similar brooches are illustrated in Mackreth, 2011, Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, volume 2, plate 129. Compare especially number 7821.
