An early medieval copper-alloy Northumbrian penny (styca), irregular issue with bludered inscription dating c. 840-870. Ref: Naismith 2017: 119-120.
The coin is badly corroded on one side, probably the obverse, with green corrosion products obscuring much of the surface. The other surface survives better although the edges are chipped and damaged.
Diameter 12.7mm, Mass 0.90g
Notes:
The dating of the irregular stycas is uncertain with coins produced in the names of several rulers (including Eanred and Aethelred II) and many of the coins have inscriptions which are badly blundered. Recent evidence suggests their production - certainly their circulation - may even extend into the 870s after the Viking take-over of York (Naismith 2017: 120).
