A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative, rear hook brooch with spring mechanism dating from AD 43 - 65. The wings are concave on the reverse to hold the copper alloy spring of 15 turns with an external chord passing though the pierced forward hook. The pin is missing. The front of the wings are decorated with a single vertical incised line at each end. The bow is humped, plain, is sub-circular in section and tapers towards the foot. The catchplate survives apart from the turnover. The brooch is silvered. It is 24.3mm long, 21.3mm wide and 11.1mm thick. 5.27g. Compare 351 and 350 on page 298 of Hattatt's visual catalogue.
