A possible lead pencil of Medieval to Post Medieval date. In plan the item is broadly triangular, tapering to a blunt point at one end. The object is square in section and has four faces. There is a grooved cross at the end of the object which may be for decoration or could possibly have been used as a stamp. There is a circular hole towards the wider end of the object, which was presumably for passing a string through for suspension. Just below the hole are deliberate wedge-shaped nicks at the corner of each adjoining face. The tapering end is damaged and bent to one side; this may be the reason the item was discarded, or possibly this event happened post-deposition.
Kevin Leahy suggests the term 'writing lead' and suggests a Medieval to Post Medieval date (pers comm November 2014). Compare IOW-AAFCB7, which also has an incuse cross on the top.
