An incomplete rectangular copper-alloy book clasp of Post-Medieval date. It is missing part of the outer edge due to old breaks, now worn.
It is flat with a 3mm long hook, which has been folded backwards projecting from one end, the other is an expanded trefoil. The front face is decorated towards the hook with two transverse grooves with a recessed transverse field between. Within this is a series of star and annulet motifs. Behind this are recessed field of three zig-zags. Within each field is a star surrounded by three annulets. In the centre and at the attachment end are circular rivet holes surrounded by three concentric circles. The back face is undecorated.
This book fitting measures 40.14mm in length, 18.56mm in width, 1.16mm in thickness, 4.05g in weight.
There are similar examples recorded on the PAS database (SF-118656), (HAMP-B46464). However, no direct parallels could be found.
