A Medieval to Post-medieval copper alloy saddle pommel fragment of 16th to 17th century date. The item is one half of a two-part pommel which was cast separately in two identical parts and then probably soldered together. The half is U-shaped in plan and convex and open semi-circular in cross-section. The exterior surface of the pommel is decorated with a series of vertical grooves which follow the shape of the item. There are two circular holes towards the open end; these are presumably for attachment. A similar two-piece example can be seen in Brian Read's 'History Beneath our Feet' p 84, number 4.
