An incomplete enamelled copper alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch in the shape of a hare dating to the period c. AD 100 - 200. The animal is depicted running right and has an extended muzzle, long pointed ears and extended front and back legs. The circular eye is recessed and contains tracces of degraded, possibly blue, enamel. There is a single sinuous recess following the shape of the body which would have contained enamel, none of which remains. The mouth, fold of the ears, paws and tail are indicated by incised lines.
The reverse features a pair of pierced lugs housing a short axis bar for a hinged pin mounted on the rump of the animal. The pin terminates in an old break. The remnant of the catchplate is positioned on the reverse of the head.
Cf. Hattat, R, 2000, p. 362, no. 1189.
The brooch measures 32.67mm in length, is 18.78mm wide, 10.40mm thick and weighs 3.72g.
