Copper alloy handle, possibly of Roman date
The object is incomplete, broken at the narrow end (with a surviving length of 38.0mm and a weight of 4.5g). The complete end is of oval section and is rounded with an expanded terminal (with a width of 10.0mm and a thickness of 3.6mm). The handle gradually narrows towards a decorative double-ribbed moulding, which all the way around the fitting. The damaged end thins, as if to a blade (with a thickness of 1.1mm). The surface has a dark-green patina.
It is possible that the object is the handle of a medical or cosmetic implement of Roman date but the few diagnostic features present make a confident identification difficult. The handle is also similar to post medieval knife handles and the object may be a 18th century toy knife
