Copper alloy finger-ring fragment, probably of Roman date
The finger-ring is fragmentary, represented by a little les than half of the bezel and a shoulder fragment only (with a surviving width of 13.4mm, a surviving length of 8.6mm and a weight of 1.1g). The hoop was of oval section and is expanding at the shoulders (with a minimum width and thickness of 3mm and 1mm respectively). The bezel was oval (8.6mm long, 2.0mm wide and 1.3mm thick) and would have had a recessed oval cell containing a glass paste, enamel or stone setting, no trace of which now survives. The underside of the bezel is gentle convex across its width. The surface has a grey-green patina.
The fragmentary nature of the finger-ring makes a confident identification difficult but the general form is consistent with some Roman period rings and may possibly of Henig's (1978)[1] Type II/III suggesting a late 1st or 2nd century AD date.
