A fragment of a Roman cast copper-alloy bow brooch, possibly a headstud type (AD 75-200).
The pin and spring mechanism is missing and the lower part of the bow is also missing.
This brooch has short wings that are concave at the rear. The right side wing has deep vertical grooves at the front. The left side wing is incomplete. At the rear of the wings there is an integral loop. From the bow, the sides of the wings taper evenly to a transverse break. Close to the wings the bow has a width of 7.1mm and the width at the break is 3.0mm. A swelling on the front of the bow may be the remains of a stud. The rear face of the bow is flat. Perhaps due to corrosion, there is no indication of a chain loop.
The brooch is corroded and in poor condition. It is reddish brown with light green corrosion deposits.
Height: 19.3mm; width of wings: 15.0mm. Weight: 2.66g.
Examples of headstud brooches are illustrated in Bayley and Butcher: 2004: 164.
Other examples are illustrated in Hattatt 1989: 332-333.
