A copper alloy Post Medieval finger ring of probable 1540-1900 date. The ring has been made in one piece with an annular band and sub-circular bezel. The band is 'D' shaped in cross section and is divided into 15 knops by cast grooves around the outside circumference while the inside circumference is flat and undecorated. The bezel is 9.9mm wide and 10.3mm long. It is incised with the letters IHS ( a Greek abbreviation for Jesus).
The Finger Ring closely resembles a number of Decade rings recorded onto the database, for example: SOMDOR-7E6495 and LANCUM-CE9AE3. However the decade rings all have 10 knops around their circumference as they are an aid the person wearing the ring in saying a rosary prayer. This ring has 15 knops and therefore dose not meet the same function. It is possible that this ring is a later copy of the style that is not intended to be used for the original function.
The Finger ring is 24.2mm in diameter, 3.7mm thicka nd weighs 4.7grams.
